Prep for Promotion® is a four part series designed for graduate students and young professionals. You got your first job...but now what? How do you advance and create your "personal brand" without the support of your university's career development office?

C4G can help. Learn these fundamental and advanced communication skills, and you'll be able to build a great career.

  1. Start with the fundamentals. Once you have a firm grasp of fundamental communication skills, you'll be able to develop the tools to land the next job.
  2. You must have an Elevator Pitch. You will often be asked, "Tell me about yourself," and how you respond can decide if the listener wants to work with you.
  3. Interviewers love situation questions. "Tell me about a time you....." We'll teach you how to put your achievements in a format that shows a history of achievement and that you know how to get things done.
  4. Getting Engagement from the interviewer is the capstone in our Prep for Promotion™ series. Engage the interviewer and you'll get an offer. In this course, you will identify and develop some tools and techniques that will help you get the interviewer on your side, and that's the key to getting that next job.

When I started my career, I was a pretty good research scientist but I knew I needed to improve my business skills. The major breakthrough came not through the workplace, but through coaching. You want to learn to communicate? Try coaching a rowdy, rough-and-tumble water polo team. I learned – and learned quickly – how to make the seemingly complex simple and how to put things in terms that were important to each athlete.
These skills helped me make the transition from scientist - the Geek and Proud of It - to entrepreneur and management consultant. The most satisfying successes in my consulting career came not from my technical brilliance, but from making things crystal clear for my clients, then teaching them how to share their best with their colleagues. Turns out, those skills were the most important thing I left for my clients. My mission now is to give the world's technical people the communication skills they need to advance their careers.
